Blessing of the Bikes – NY

After hearing of a motorcycle club in Connecticut that rides annually to a shrine for the blessing of their motorcycles, bicycle tour operator Glen Goldstein approached the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York with an idea: Could the church host their own blessing of the bikes? 14 years later, the Blessing of the Bikes continues to bring together local clergy and the surrounding community.

Yet as bicycles become a more popular mode of transportation in major cities, the blessing carries more meaning: Many participants seek the spiritual protection as well as a chance to honor the dozens who have died in traffic accidents.

Held before the Five Boro Bike Tour, Photographer Scott Houston documented this short ceremony and the diversity of its dedicated participants.
